The official Warner Bros. Pictures on-screen logo made it's debut in Christopher Nolan's "Tenet". However, because Nolan loves his ambience and secret colour codes, we have yet to see the 2019 rebrand properly realised on the silver screen with their new blue and classic fanfare.
I pulled an all nighter and a morning working on this and while it's not perfect, it's probably the closest to the real thing at the moment until WB does a home release of one of these films with the new logo.
DISCLAIMER: This was made out of pure passion for graphic design and the cinematic experience and I did this as a personal study in my graphic design and film journey. While the recreation of this logo is my own work, elements of the official WB 2019 logo were used and the official design of the WB 2020 logo are trademarks belonging to Warner Bros. Entertainment and were designed by Pentagram.
PROCESS:
I was planning on learning how to use Cinema 4D, model the shield and then animate in C4D but I decided to work with what I know and get a logo video out asap.
In Photoshop, I'd tried digitally painting the diffused light experementing with bevels and drawing in hightlights on top of a vector logo based off of a picture of the logo, scanned in Illustrator. I spent a long time checking my shading using the couple leaked clips online.
Bringing it into After Effects, I'd taken the previous 2019 WB logo and using some feathering techniques, I made my own clean plate of the signature cloudy sky. My educated guess is that the animation studio that produced this new logo had access to a clean plate from the 1998-2019 version.
I then brought my rendered 2D logo and animated that in 3D space, using masks to stitch it with the ripple section of the previous logo from 2019. (I'm almost certain this is what they did anyway) Some basic fading, some subtle reflection effects, a lens flare picture and a glow effect later, it was done!
I'm very proud of this because apart from some little things like the absence of a 3D shield and the mirrored materials in the lettering, I'm almost certain that the casual viewer won't think that it's not a genuine logo. This very quick project served as a culmination of many years of experience in graphic design, and motion graphics and to churn something out at this speed and quality makes me feel chuffed!
Maybe later, once my schedule clears up, I'll update it with a 3D shield!
