Astor Piazzolla - Live at Regina Theatre - 04 - Primavera Porteña
Among the gems that emanated from Astor Piazzolla's recordings for RCA Victor and CBS Columbia, Teatro Regina shines brightly. This album, originally recorded in 1970, is another in the Edicion Critica series that Sony BMG has remastered and reissued so as to bring that important period of Piazzolla's career back to the attention of the listening public.
This recording of Astor Piazzolla and his quintet live at Teatro Regina is in several ways a career milestone for Piazzolla. First of all, the concert marks the tenth anniversary of this Piazzolla formation. Secondly, it is the first time that all sections of his thematic Four Seasons of Buenos Aires has been recorded live together.
I find no fault with anything here. Piazzolla fans who have not heard this will be delighted by the exquisite realization of the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires and should be delighted with everything else including the four bonus cuts from the film Con Alma Y Vida that were recorded the same year.
My favorites are the aforementioned tour de force Four Seasons and the delightful Retrato de Alfredo Gobbi. Of the bonus cuts, I most enjoy Casa Pueblo and Flaco Aroldi.
Piazzolla is quoted as saying that he could die in peace after hearing the live portion of this recording. I think that most listeners may feel the same way. As with others in the Edicion Critica series, Teatro Regina comes with a folding booklet that features (all in Spanish), the original liner notes, album information, a short Piazzolla biography, and succinct commentary on the recording at hand by Diego Fischerman. There are quite a few Piazzolla recordings that should be termed essential to any fan of modern tango. This is one of that group.
